Spencer Area Shrine

In April of 1965, a group of Spencer Shriners formed The Spencer Area Shrine Club which included Shriners from the surrounding towns. The bylaws for this club were approved by the Divan on April 23, 1965. The Club was initially under the directions of Don Peters as President and Dan Maxwell as Secretary-Treasurer. The Spencer Area Shrine club now provides fellowship and activities for its members, living in an area ranging from Spencer to Primghar, Sibley, Lake Park, Terril, Emmetsburg, Sutherland and Laurens.

Since the early 1960’s The Spencer Area Shrine club members have contributed Shrine Circus Tickets purchased by them to send between 200 and 250 fifth grade children from Spencer, as well as children from other surrounding areas as needed. The Spencer Area Shrine Club has throughout its existence liberally supported the Shriner’s Childrens Hospital with financial contributions and has been instrumental in getting children from the area admitted to the Shriner’s Children Hospital. May,19 1984 was another highlight of the Spencer Area Shrine Club, the Spring Ceremonial was held at Spencer at that time. The Ceremonial was held at the Clay County Fair grounds and was followed by a huge parade of all the uniformed units from Abu Bekr Temple with Shrine Units from Soux Falls, SD and Cedar Rapids, IA joining us also. A estimated 15,000 people turned out to view the festivities and the parade. The entire day was a highlight for Abu Bekr and the Spencer area.
